Drawings

Apr 6 - May 13, 2017

Rose Wylie has in recent years made a much appreciated breakthrough on the international art scene. It is with great pleasure that we present a selection of her drawings and collages, now displayed in Sweden for the first time. With references to popular culture, and with a fearless confidence in her artistic choices, her works are playful and sensitive, filled with madcap energy and a delightful sense of anarchy. Rose Wylie is 83 years old.

In 2010, aged 76, Wylie was the only non-American in Women to Watch at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Following the exhibition her art has been widely displayed internationally. Wylie displays an almost obsessive need to make visual notes, drawings and paintings – often in large formats – and working on un-stretched canvases and paper allows for as few restrictions as possible: extensions, combinations of parts and collages are added freely. Wylie aims for a direct and unpretentious expression. She often finds her subject matters in magazines, films and television. Movie stars and footballers are recurrent. They are characters we can all relate to visually as part of our shared culture, and in her sketches Wylie gradually reduces them to visual concentrates. Her artwork combines an eclectic array of precisely cut, seemingly childish snapshots and notifications that on closer examination can turn out to be volatile, outrageous, and exhilarating.

Rose Wylie was born in 1934 in Kent, England, where she now lives and works in the village of Newnham. She was educated at Folkestone & Dover School of Art and The Royal College of Art, London, and has won several important awards. In 2015 she was elected a Royal Academician. Paintings by Rose Wylie have previously been shown at Christian Larsen in the group exhibition Mixed Signals.
